A Map That Changed Medicine
In 1854, a cholera outbreak killed hundreds of people in a few weeks in the Soho district of London. At the time, most doctors believed that cholera spread through "bad air" rising from rotting waste. The physician John Snow suspected contaminated water instead.
Snow marked each death on a street map and noticed that the cases clustered around a public water pump on Broad Street. He also found telling exceptions: workers at a nearby brewery, who drank beer and water from the brewery's own well, largely escaped the disease. After Snow presented his evidence, local officials removed the pump's handle, and new cases, which were already declining, soon fell further.
Snow's work did not immediately convince the medical establishment, and the germ that causes cholera was not widely accepted until decades later. Nevertheless, his careful use of maps and comparisons is now regarded as a foundation of modern epidemiology.
