The Rhythm of Shopping

In a well-known study, a supermarket played slow instrumental music on some days and fast music on others. On slow-music days, shoppers walked more slowly through the aisles and spent about 15 percent more money on average. The researchers concluded that the tempo of background music can influence how long people stay and how much they buy.

Later studies produced a more complicated picture. In some restaurants, slow music made diners stay longer but did not increase spending per person, which reduced the number of customers served each evening. The effect also seemed weaker when shoppers arrived with a written list or were in a hurry.

Today, many stores choose music to match their goals rather than simply playing slow songs. A busy fast-food outlet may prefer quicker music, while a furniture shop may want customers to linger.
