Sleeping with One Eye Open
Dolphins must swim to the surface to breathe, so they cannot fall into the deep, complete sleep that humans experience. Instead, they rest one half of the brain at a time. While one half sleeps, the other stays alert enough to control breathing and watch for danger. The eye controlled by the sleeping half is usually closed.
This pattern, known as unihemispheric sleep, has also been recorded in some birds. Ducks sleeping at the edge of a group tend to keep the eye facing outward open, while ducks in the middle of the group more often sleep with both halves of the brain at once.
Scientists believe that this ability evolved where full sleep would be too dangerous. It allows an animal to rest without becoming completely defenseless, although each half of the brain still needs its share of sleep over the course of a day.
