Why Your Keyboard Looks the Way It Does
The QWERTY layout, named after the first six letters on its top row, was developed for mechanical typewriters in the 1870s. A popular story claims that it was designed to slow typists down. Historians now offer a more precise explanation: the arms that struck the paper could jam when two neighboring arms were used in quick succession, so letter pairs that often appear together in English were separated.
Later layouts promised faster typing. The Dvorak layout, introduced in the 1930s, placed the most common letters on the middle row. Some early studies reported large gains in speed, but later reviews found that those studies were small and often run by the layout's own inventor. Independent tests found only modest differences.
By then, millions of typists had already learned QWERTY, and employers expected it. Switching would have required retraining workers and replacing machines for an uncertain benefit. The layout therefore survived the typewriter itself and moved onto computers and phones, where jamming is no longer possible.
