A Mind Spread Across Eight Arms
The common octopus has about 500 million neurons, a number similar to that of a dog. What is unusual is where those neurons are. Roughly two-thirds of them are located not in the brain but in the arms. Each arm can taste, touch, and even make simple decisions, such as whether to grasp an object, without waiting for instructions from the brain.
This arrangement may explain some remarkable behavior. In laboratory tests, octopuses have unscrewed jar lids to reach food, and some have learned to recognize individual keepers, squirting water at those they seem to dislike. Yet octopuses live only one to two years and receive no care from their parents, so almost everything they know must be learned quickly and alone.
Researchers caution against judging octopus intelligence by human standards. A mind that is partly distributed across eight arms may solve problems in ways that are difficult for us to imagine, and tests designed for mammals may miss what octopuses actually do well.
