Travelling by Starlight

Most songbirds that migrate long distances, such as warblers and thrushes, travel at night, even though they are active only during the day for the rest of the year. Several advantages have been proposed. The night air is usually cooler and calmer, which reduces water loss and allows birds to fly with less effort. Flying at night also leaves the daylight hours free for feeding, so a bird can refuel on the same day it lands.

Navigation, however, is the most puzzling part. Experiments with caged birds have shown that young birds learn to recognize the point in the night sky around which the stars appear to rotate, and they use it to find north. Birds also sense the Earth's magnetic field, which allows them to keep their direction on cloudy nights when the stars are hidden.

These abilities come at a price in the modern world. Bright city lights can confuse night migrants, drawing them toward illuminated buildings where many die in collisions. In some cities, volunteers now count dead birds each morning during migration season, and their records have persuaded several building owners to switch off decorative lights at night.
