Working Less, Producing the Same?
In 2022, 61 companies in the United Kingdom took part in a six-month trial of a four-day working week. Employees kept their full pay but worked about twenty percent fewer hours. At the end of the trial, 56 of the companies chose to continue with the shorter week, and most reported that revenue had stayed roughly the same. Employees reported less stress and fewer sick days.
Supporters argue that the results show that much of a standard working week is spent on unproductive meetings and interruptions. When time becomes scarce, they say, teams remove what does not matter. Critics respond that the companies volunteered for the trial, so they were probably already confident that their work could be reorganized. They also note that the participants were mostly office-based firms; a hospital or a bus company cannot simply produce the same output in fewer hours.
The debate, then, is less about whether a shorter week can work than about where it can work. Researchers suggest that future trials should include randomly selected companies and sectors in which output depends directly on hours worked.
