The Power and Limits of a Streak
Many language-learning apps reward users with a "streak", a count of how many days in a row they have practised. The idea draws on a simple observation: people dislike losing something they already have. A learner with a 200-day streak is likely to open the app at midnight rather than watch the number fall back to zero.
Data released by one app company showed that users who kept a streak of at least seven days were three times as likely to still be using the app a month later. The company presented this as evidence that streaks help people learn. Researchers, however, point out that the most motivated learners are probably the ones who build long streaks in the first place.
There is also a question of what is being protected. A learner can preserve a streak by completing a single easy exercise in two minutes, so the number may grow while real progress stalls. Some teachers now encourage students to treat the streak as a reminder to practise, not as a measure of how much they have learned.
