The Last Keepers
For centuries, every lighthouse needed people to keep it working. Keepers climbed the tower several times a night to trim wicks, refill oil, and wind the clockwork that turned the lens. In storms they stayed awake until dawn, because a light that went dark could send a ship onto the rocks.
Electricity changed the job gradually. Electric lamps did not need trimming, and automatic switches could replace a failed bulb with a spare one. By the late twentieth century, lighthouses in many countries could be monitored from a distant control room, and the last resident keepers were withdrawn. Satellite navigation later made many lights less essential, although sailors still rely on them when electronic systems fail.
Not everyone welcomed the change. Keepers had often rescued shipwrecked sailors and reported unusual weather, tasks that no automatic switch could perform. Today, some former lighthouses are run by local volunteers as museums, preserving the memory of a way of life that had lasted for centuries before machines took it over in just a few decades.
