Paper or Screen?
For years, studies comparing reading on paper with reading on screens produced mixed results. A 2018 meta-analysis that pooled 54 studies with more than 170,000 participants found a modest but consistent advantage for paper when readers were tested on informational texts. Interestingly, the gap did not appear for narrative texts, and it was larger when readers were under time pressure.
Researchers have proposed several explanations. One is that screens encourage a faster, skimming style of reading that suits social media but not careful study. Another is that readers using screens tend to be overconfident: they predict higher scores for themselves than readers using paper do, and so they stop reviewing sooner.
Notably, the paper advantage seemed to grow, not shrink, in more recent studies, even though younger participants had grown up with digital devices. This finding challenges a common assumption about how the gap would change over time.
