Cooling the City from the Top
Cities are often several degrees warmer than the surrounding countryside, a phenomenon known as the urban heat island. Dark surfaces such as asphalt and roofing tar absorb sunlight during the day and release the stored heat at night, so the difference between urban and rural temperatures is often greatest after sunset. Because cooler nights allow the human body to recover from daytime heat, this nighttime gap matters for health as much as daytime peaks do.
One proposed remedy is the green roof, a layer of soil and vegetation installed on top of a building. Plants cool the air through evapotranspiration, releasing water vapor that carries heat away, while the soil layer insulates the rooms below. Measurements have shown that on a summer afternoon the surface of a green roof can be more than 30 degrees Celsius cooler than that of a conventional black roof.
However, the benefits are uneven. A green roof needs regular watering in dry seasons; without water, its plants wilt and much of its cooling effect disappears. Its weight may also require structural reinforcement, which makes it costly for older buildings. For this reason, some researchers argue that cool roofs, which are simply coated with highly reflective white paint, offer a cheaper first step, even though they provide none of the other benefits of vegetation, such as absorbing rainwater or supporting insects.
