Why Every Student Should Learn Basic First Aid

Accidents can happen anywhere: at school, on the road, or at home. Yet most students have never been taught what to do in the first few minutes after an accident. I believe that basic first aid should be a compulsory part of the school curriculum.

First, first aid saves lives. According to the Red Cross, a person who stops breathing can suffer brain damage within four to six minutes, but an ambulance in a busy city often needs more than ten minutes to arrive. Someone who knows how to perform simple life-saving steps can bridge this gap.

Second, first-aid training builds confidence and responsibility. Many people stand still in an emergency, not because they do not care, but because they are afraid of doing the wrong thing. Students who practise regularly are more likely to act calmly.

Third, first aid is easy to learn. A short course of only eight hours can teach students how to stop bleeding, treat burns, and perform chest compressions. Schools do not need expensive equipment; a doll, a few bandages, and a trained instructor are enough.

Some people claim that the curriculum is already too full. However, first aid does not have to be a separate subject. It can be taught in a few sessions of health or physical education. For these reasons, I strongly urge schools to include basic first-aid training for all students.
