The Last Bus

It was almost midnight when Dani reached the bus stop outside the hospital. She had finished a double shift as a trainee nurse, and her feet ached. The street was empty. The last bus to her neighbourhood was supposed to leave at 11.45, but the display board showed only a blank, blue screen.

Ten minutes passed. A man in a dark jacket arrived and stood a few metres away. He kept looking at her, and then at his phone, and then at her again. Dani felt her heart beat faster. She took out her own phone and pretended to make a call, although her battery showed only three per cent.

"Excuse me," the man said at last. Dani stiffened. "Are you also waiting for the number nine? I think it has been cancelled. I saw a notice at the terminal this afternoon." He held out his phone. On the screen was a photograph of a paper notice taped to a window: "Number 9: no service after 11.00 p.m. this week due to road repairs."

Dani let out a breath she did not know she had been holding. "Thank you," she said. "I have been staring at that board for twenty minutes." He laughed softly. "I'm a driver myself, so I always check the notices. If you like, I can call my brother. He lives near your area and has a car."

In the end, they waited together until his brother arrived. As she watched the red lights of the car disappear down the road, Dani realised how quickly she had judged a stranger by the way he stood in the dark.
