TOEFL ITP - Reading Comprehension
136. Read the following passage, then answer the question below.
The Globe, the playhouse where many of Shakespeare's plays were first performed, opened in London in 1599. It was a circular, open-air building of timber and plaster, with a thatched roof over the galleries but an unroofed yard in the center. Standing in that yard, the groundlings paid a penny to watch the play, while wealthier patrons paid more for seats in the covered galleries. Performances took place in the afternoon, since there was no artificial lighting, and audiences of up to three thousand could crowd in.
The design shaped the plays themselves. A projecting stage meant that actors were surrounded on three sides, so a performer could not rely on a painted backdrop or a hidden curtain. Instead, playwrights used language to establish setting and mood. When a character announces that it is a cold night on the battlements, an audience in bright afternoon sunshine accepts it, because the words create the scene. Soliloquies, in which a character speaks thoughts aloud, also benefited from the setup: standing close to the yard, an actor could seem to confide directly in the crowd.
The original theatre burned down in 1613 when a cannon fired during a performance ignited the thatch. It was rebuilt the next year, with a tiled roof, and remained in use until Parliament ordered playhouses closed in 1642. The building was later demolished. In 1997, after decades of research and campaigning by the American actor Sam Wanamaker, a reconstruction opened near the original site. Its builders used oak timber, lime plaster, and traditional methods, and the new Globe has shown modern directors what works and what does not on a stage built to Elizabethan principles.
