A Weekend at the Robotics Competition

Last weekend, our school team took part in the regional robotics competition. There were twenty-four teams, and our task was to build a robot that could collect small balls and place them in a container within three minutes.

We spent four weeks building the robot. At our final practice on Thursday, it worked perfectly. However, on the morning of the competition, the robot's left wheel stopped turning during the first test round. Our team leader, Salma, stayed calm. "We have forty minutes," she said. "Let's check the simple things first." Reno found that a tiny wire had come loose when the robot was carried into the hall. He reconnected it in five minutes.

In the first official round, our robot collected nine balls and placed seven in the container. That score put us in fifth position. In the second round, we changed the speed of the arm so that it would not drop the balls. This time, the robot placed eleven balls, but we lost points because it moved outside the boundary line once.

In the end, we finished third out of twenty-four teams. We did not win the trophy, but we received a special prize for teamwork. The judges said that our team had solved its problems calmly and had shared the work fairly.

On the way home, Salma told us that she had been very nervous when the wheel stopped. Yet she hid it, because she thought the team needed someone to stay steady. I realised then that being a good leader is not about knowing every answer, but about helping others think clearly.
