Why Teenagers Should Learn to Manage Money

Many teenagers receive pocket money every week, but few of them learn how to use it wisely. In my opinion, schools and families should teach teenagers how to manage money, for the following reasons.

First, money skills are needed in adult life. A survey of 1,000 young workers found that one third of them had no savings after three months of working. The main reason was not low salaries but spending without a plan. Teenagers who learn budgeting early are less likely to face this problem.

Second, managing money teaches self-control. Teenagers often see advertisements that encourage them to buy things immediately. If they learn to wait and compare prices, they can resist unnecessary purchases and save for something more valuable.

Third, early savings grow over time. Suppose a student saves Rp50.000 every month for five years at an annual interest rate of 4 per cent. At the end, the savings will be about Rp3.300.000, of which Rp3.000.000 is the money that the student deposited. Although the interest is small, the habit is valuable.

Some people think teenagers are too young to deal with money. However, learning about money does not mean giving teenagers large sums; it means helping them make small decisions and learn from their mistakes. Therefore, money management should be included in school programmes.
