The Night Market near My School

Every Friday evening, the street beside my school becomes a night market. Around five o'clock, the stalls begin to appear: wooden tables, plastic stools, and rows of colourful umbrellas. By six, hundreds of lamps are lit, and the road looks like a river of warm yellow light.

The market has three main areas. At the entrance, sellers offer cheap clothes and phone accessories, and customers argue happily about prices. In the middle, there is the food area, where the smell of grilled corn, fried noodles, and sweet pancakes mixes in the air. Smoke rises from the charcoal stoves, and the sound of hot oil is almost as loud as the voices of the sellers. At the far end, a small stage is used by local students who sing and play guitar.

My favourite place is a stall run by Mr Joko, who sells peanut soup. He has been selling the same dish for twenty years, and he knows many customers by name. When I was younger, he gave me an extra spoon of peanuts if I finished my homework at his table.

Not everyone loves the market, though. Some residents complain about the rubbish and the noise, and parents worry about crowded sidewalks. The organisers try to solve these problems by placing extra bins and ending the music at nine o'clock. Despite the difficulties, the market remains a place where neighbours meet, and, for a few hours each week, the street belongs to everyone.
