How to Start a Compost Bin at School

Food scraps make up a large part of the rubbish that schools throw away every day. A compost bin turns this waste into rich soil for the school garden. Here is how a class can start one in a few weeks.

Step 1: Choose a spot. Find a shady place on bare soil, away from classrooms. Shade stops the bin from drying out, and bare soil lets worms enter from below.

Step 2: Build the base. Put a layer of small branches at the bottom. The branches let air move under the pile. Without air, the pile will smell bad.

Step 3: Add layers. Alternate "green" materials, such as fruit peels and grass, with "brown" materials, such as dry leaves and torn paper. Aim for about twice as much brown as green. If the pile becomes wet and smelly, add more brown material.

Step 4: Keep it moist and turn it. The pile should feel like a squeezed sponge. Turn it with a fork every two weeks so that air reaches the centre. Never add meat, fish, or oily food, because they attract rats.

Step 5: Wait and harvest. After two to three months, the bottom of the pile becomes dark and crumbly. This is compost. Spread it around the plants in your school garden.
